The swine flu vaccine has been on my mind.
A post I read originally on Life With Food Allergies Blog has given me hope. Reportedly, drug company Novartis, has created a swine flu vaccine that will be safe for those with egg allergy.
I stil have a bunch of questions, though. It seems that other companies will be manufacturing swine flu vaccine that wouldn't be safe for those with egg allergy. How will distribution be handled? People who can't have the egg-based vaccine should certainly be the top priority for the new vaccine. Also, will the FDA cause this vaccine to hang up in the US? If it is available in Europe, can we go there to get the vaccine for our egg allergic family members?
It seems there are no clear cut answers to these questions yet.

I have been hearing the they are egg free also and I agree egg allergic children should be at the top of the list.
They are still conducting safety studies and those results will not be out until September. Hopefully we will have some information enough to know if it is safe to be given in at least October so that when flu season really hits there has been time to build up some immunity.
The CDC is scheduled to announce their recommendations to schools today about how to deal with swine flu. This is going to be a hot topic as we enter this new school year.
There is no reason to believe, based on PRESENT evidence, that the new egg based H1N1 vaccine will not be as safe for egg allergic children as the current influenza vaccine. At least 95% of egg allergic patients can receive flu vaccine. You do not have to use the Novartis cell-based vaccine, where there is no evidence that this is necessarily safer. My recommendation is that no one should be saying anything about what type of vaccine the egg allergic population should be receiving, as there are procedures in place to test the vaccine prior to administering it. There is no need to panic until there is evidence of a problem.
Swine flu is a disease of pigs. It is a highly contagious disease caused by one of many Influenza A viruses. So Swine flu vaccine safe for those who have egg allergy.
